Your Session Guide

Everything you need for your golden hour

This guide is designed to help you feel confident, prepared, and completely yourself on session day. Read it once, reference it the week before, and trust the process.

What to Wear

Styling that works

  • Solid, muted tones — earth tones, creams, sage, dusty rose, rust, and camel photograph beautifully in golden light.
  • Layers and texture — linen, denim, knits, and flowy fabrics add depth and movement to every frame.
  • Coordinate, don't match — aim for a shared palette rather than identical outfits. Think tonal harmony.
  • Accessorize intentionally — a hat, layered necklaces, or a vintage watch can define a portrait.
  • Bring a second look — a simple outfit change mid-session adds variety without adding time.
What to Avoid

Skip these

  • Loud logos or bold graphics — they pull focus from your face and compete with the light.
  • Neon or electric colors — they reflect onto skin and clash with warm golden tones.
  • All-black everything — it absorbs light and loses detail. If you love black, pair it with something lighter.
  • Brand-new shoes you haven't broken in — comfort matters when we're moving through locations.
  • Anything you'd normally never wear — authenticity always photographs better than costume.
Pack List

What to bring along

Water & snacks

San Diego golden hour is warm. Stay hydrated and keep energy up, especially for younger subjects.

Touch-up essentials

Lip balm, blotting papers, a mini brush or comb. We'll have a few minutes to reset between setups.

Your second look

If you planned an outfit change, bring it in a garment bag. We'll find a clean spot for a quick swap.

Something meaningful

A favorite book, a letter jacket, an instrument, flowers — personal props tell your story.

Location & Timing

We shoot where the light is best

Every location is hand-picked for golden hour quality — western exposure, open sky, and natural texture. You’ll receive the exact address and parking details 48 hours before your session.

Arrive on time

Golden hour doesn’t wait. Your session time is synced to the sun. Arriving on time means we capture every minute of that light.

Comfortable footwear

We may walk on grass, sand, trails, or gravel. Wear shoes you can move in — bring heels or dress shoes to swap into for specific shots.

Expect warmth

San Diego golden hour means warm temperatures and direct sun. Sunscreen on exposed areas is fine — just skip the shimmer and glitter finishes.

Session Day Timeline

How the day unfolds

1 week before

Finalize your looks

Lay everything out, try it on, and photograph it in natural light. If it doesn't feel like you, swap it.

Day before

Prep and rest

Hydrate, get a good night's sleep, and avoid anything that might cause skin irritation. Natural is always best.

Day of — 2 hours before

Get ready at your pace

Style your hair and keep makeup natural. Matte finishes photograph better than shimmer in direct golden light.

Relax into the session. We start with natural movement and candids while the light is still soft and directional.

The magic window

The light turns liquid gold. This is when we capture the portraits that define the session. Every frame counts.

Common Questions

Before you ask

What if it rains on session day?

We monitor weather closely and will reach out 48 hours before if conditions look unfavorable. We always reschedule at no cost — golden hour is non-negotiable.

Can I bring friends or family to watch?

We recommend keeping the set small to help you stay relaxed and present. One parent or one close friend is welcome. Large groups change the energy of a session.

Should I get my hair and makeup professionally done?

Totally up to you. Many of our favorite portraits come from people who did their own hair and makeup. If you do hire a stylist, ask for a natural, soft look — heavy makeup can look harsh in golden light.

What if I have no idea what to wear?

Send us a photo of your closet or some outfit options and we'll help you curate the perfect looks. Styling guidance is included with every session.

How long does the session last?

Roughly 90 minutes — timed to the sun. We start while the light is warm and directional and shoot through to the final frame at sunset.

Can we shoot at a location I choose?

We're open to it. We curate locations based on light quality, not just scenery. If your spot has great western exposure and open sky, it could be perfect. Send it over and we'll let you know.

That’s everything. Now just show up as you.

We handle the light, the angles, and the timing. You just bring yourself.
